The first cycle of studies at the University is organized and carried out in accordance with the Sarajevo Canton Law on Higher Education that is based on the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).
The first cycle of studies takes three or four years and is evaluated with 240 ECTS. The ECTS correspond to the criteria European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).
The second cycle studies lasts one or two study years, and are evaluated with 60 or 120 ECTS, so that in the sum of the first cycle of studies it carries 300 ECTS study points.
The aggregated studies last five or six study years and are valued at 300 or 360 ECTS.
The third cycle of studies lasts three study years, and is valued at 180 ECTS points.
The University of Sarajevo Faculties/Academies offer a possibility of enrolling in more than 500 study programs. Study programs are available on the University’s website: http://unsa.ba
Students enroll in the first year of study in pursuance to the defined student enrollment plan. Applications for enrollment in the first year of the first study cycle are announced in mid-June of the current year. The competition call shall be published on the University of Sarajevo’s website (www.unsa.ba), as a notice announcing the start of the call will be available in the daily press. On their websites/bulletin boards, the organizational units will provide complete information about the venue and time values for submitting documents for applying to competition call.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR ENROLMENT?
B-H nationals and foreigners who completed their 4 years secondary education in Bosnia and Herzegovina have the right to participate in the competition call, as well as candidates who completed their secondary education outside of Bosnia and Herzegovina for whom is found, after the process of validation or equivalence, to have completed adequate education for further education.
The right to participate in the competition for enrollment in the second cycle of studies under equal conditions have Bosnia and Herzegovina citizens and foreign nationals with completed corresponding first cycle of study, which is evaluated with at least 180 and 240 (E)CTS study points as well as candidates who have completed studies in accordance with ante-Bologna curricula and programs in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as candidates who completed the first cycle or ante-Bologna study outside Bosnia and Herzegovina, for which after recognition or equivalence procedure was found that they have completed adequate education for continuing their education.
The right to participate in the competition for enrollment in the second cycle of studies under equal conditions have Bosnia and Herzegovina citizens and foreign nationals who have completed the corresponding second cycle of study or equivalent (academic degree of master) from the relevant field/sciences. 60 ECTS credits are awarded to candidates who have obtained the Master of Science degree prior to the introduction of the Bologna system studies in the area relevant to the area from which the third cycle studies are organized.
Candidates who have finished secondary school or studies outside of Bosnia and Herzegovina have the right to participate in the competition, or prior to the recognition of the diploma or secondary education certificate completion equivalence performing or study abroad respectively may also be conditionally enrolled before the recognition of the foreign higher education qualification or secondary education certificate equivalence, with the presentation of a confirmation that the recognition procedure or equivalence at their request is ongoing and that the delay in making the appropriate decision is not thereof the result of their omission that they can be charged off.
The right to participate in the competition and taking the admission exam have also candidates with completed secondary education, according to international programs approved by the competent ministry, as well as candidates from the states established after the break-up of the SFRY, which are obliged to submit a certificate of completed secondary school or a recognized certificate for candidates who did not complete their education in Bosnia and Herzegovina before the beginning of the enrollment.
THE COMPETITION ENTERING AND RANG-LIST
When applying to enter in the competition, candidates submit original documents or a certified photocopy of documents in accordance with the competition conditions.
The Preliminary Ranking List of all applied candidates who applied and those selected at an organizational unit will be published on the website and the notice board upon verification by the organizational unit’s council, no later than two days after the last day of the admission exam. For the organizational units where there is no entrance examination, no later than two days after the deadline for submitting applications.
Within seven days from the date of publication of the final ranking list, the candidate who has obtained the right to enroll is obliged to submit the original documents to the organizational unit. Otherwise, he is deemed to have given up his enrollment to the study program for which he applied.
The selection of candidates is based on the Decision on the criteria determining the order of candidates admission for enrollment in the first year of studies to the University of Sarajevo’s organizational units, which is an integral part of the competition call, as well as the individual criteria established for evaluation of subjects relevant for a Study program and evaluation of the results achieved at the entrance examinations, if foreseen.
If the admission examination is foreseen, each organizational unit determines the date of taking the admission exam, as well as the content and method of admission, which will be published on its web page/bulletin boards.
DOCUMENTS FOR ENROLMENT:
- an application for entry which clearly indicates the department for which one is competing,
- for enrollment in the first cycle of studies and aggregated study: original evidence of completed secondary school grades in Bosnia and Herzegovina in four-years duration, i.e. corresponding recognized documents for candidates who did not complete secondary school in Bosnia and Herzegovina (if the documents are undergoing the recognition process, verified and translated by the court interpreter documents are enclosed),
- the original diploma of completed secondary school for enrollment in the first cycle of studies/aggregated studies,
- for enrollment in the second cycle of studies: the original diploma and diploma supplement for students who completed the Bologna study program in Bosnia and Herzegovina, i.e. a recognized diploma for candidates who did not complete the previous studies in Bosnia and Herzegovina (students who completed the first cycle of studies in BiH can, if the diploma and diploma supplements are awarded after the completion of the deadline for submission of entries for the competition, apply with the study completion credentials)
- birth certificate,
- a citizenship certificate,
- other documents relevant to determining the number of points by criteria, as well as any other documents listed in the text of the competition.
RECOGNITION OF DOCUMENTS
Foreign citizens who wish to enroll at the University of Sarajevo must have recognized their foreign higher education qualifications or obtain the equivalence of the completed secondary school certificate. Recognition is done by the Federal Ministry of Education and Science. More on recognition is stated on the Ministry’s website (www.fmon.gov.ba ). Academic recognition for the continuation of studies at the University of Sarajevo is carried out by its Faculties/Academies.
The bearing of the part of the prices of services and tuition fees at the University of Sarajevo, its Faculties and Academies in its composition is determined by the Decision of the Cantonal Government of Sarajevo on granting approval for participation fees for services prices, subscriptions and other costs of studies at the University of Sarajevo, faculties and academies of its composition.
The tuition fee can be set at a different level regarding the University organizational units for different study programs within them, depending on the cost of their realization.
The organizational unit is obliged not to charge tuition fees for students from the Shahid and children of fallen soldiers, children of war disabled soldiers, children of decorated soldiers and children without both parents.
TEACHING PROCESS ORGANIZATION
The study year is organized in two semesters: winter and summer one.
Teaching runs for 15 weeks of continuous activities).
Teaching is realized and performed according to the schedule that the organizational unit is required to publish no later than ten days before the start of the lessons. The subject teacher is obliged to familiarize students with the work plan on the subject in the first week of realization of the course.
Verification of a semester and year is mandatory for all students. On the basis of the certified semester and year, it is determined how many ECTS the student has earned.
The semester is verified on the basis of the signatures of teachers holding all obligatory and elective subjects in that semester in the student’s index (grade book). Based on the certified semester and year, it is determined how many ECTS student has scored. The teacher’s signature on the regular attendance and fulfillment of planned semestrial obligations is a condition for student’s taking the final exam.
Knowledge assessment forms can be written, oral and practical. As a rule, knowledge assessment takes form of a test or written paper. The organizational unit’s Council, by a special decree, determines all forms of knowledge assessment, as well as the structure with scoring scales for each subject.
The final success of a student after taking all forms of knowledge assessment is evaluated and evaluated by a system comparable to the ECTS system, as follows:
10 (A) – (outstanding success without mistakes or with minor flaws), carries 95-100 points,
9 (B) – (above the average, with a few noticeable mistakes), carries 85-94 points,
8 (C) – (average, with noticeable mistakes), carries 75-84 points,
7 (D) – [generally good, however there are more significant flaws), carries 65-74 points,
6 (E) – (fulfills the minimum criteria), carries 55-64 points,
5 (F, FX) – (does not fulfill the minimum criteria). Less than 55 points.
The student who passed all the exams prescribed by the enrolled study and fulfilled all other obligations from the University Statute and the rules of the first cycle of studies from the appropriate study program acquires the qualification of bachelor. An undergraduate studies diploma is also accompanied by the Diploma Supplement due to a more detailed insight into the level, nature, content, system and rules of studies and outcomes during achieved studying.
Upon completing the first cycle of studies, graduates obtain the academic title, i.e. the title of an undergraduate study bachelor or an equivalent vocation.
Upon completing the second cycle of academic studies, graduates obtain the professional title of Master (MA), or an equivalent professional title.
Upon completion of the aggregated studies, the academic title and professional title of the Master (MA) shall be acquired, or the equivalent professional title or the title of doctor or equivalent one.
Upon completing the third cycle of academic studies, one is awarded with the academic title or scientific respectively professional title of a Doctor of Science or Doctor of Arts.
In addition to the diploma of the completed study, a diploma supplement is issued for a more detailed insight into the level, nature, content, system and rules of study and achieved results during the studies.
